Backcountry ski and snowboard gear, camping

June 2004

... Continued

Since we were hiking along the sunny south-facing side of the cirque, it took us awhile to hit snow.  Joe and Gary, in their ski boots, were glad when we finally did.  Gary led a bootpack up the SE face of North Peak -- very steep initially, but quickly relenting to a pleasant climb up snowy slopes with insane views over Mount Conness and the Twenty Lakes Basin.  Conveniently, the snowfield we were climbing on led us right to our goal: a huge notch in the ridge at around 11,700'.  On the opposite side of the ridge, the steep and narrow NE Couloir plunged down hundreds of feet from the notch to the snow apron far below.  We hung out on the steep couloir entrance eating lunch, trading ski stories and enjoying the views.

On Snow At Last.  Joe and Gary on stage 2 of the Saddlebag bike/hike/ski trifecta.

Slackers.  It took Matt and I a few minutes to swap out our approach shoes for ski boots.  At least that was our excuse for falling behind and letting Joe and Gary set the boot track...

Snow Finger.  Matt ascending the SE snowfield with the Conness "snowfinger" visible behind him.

At the Notch.  Gary and Matt arrive at the notch, quite pleased to see what lies on the other side of the ridge.

Down the Couloir.  Looking down the other side.  Notice the absolutely perfect snow conditions.

"That's where I'm going dude, right there!".  Joe scoping out his line.  This photo gives you an idea of how steep the entrance is.
