Backcountry ski and snowboard gear, camping

December 2003

Note:  clicking on any photograph will present a full screen version.

Twin Peaks on Day 2.  The next morning I headed out solo. Got a nice view of Twin Peaks above the shoulder of Snow King and Alpine Meadows Resort.  If this snow keeps up, that central chute should be setting up nicely.

Silver Peak and Neighbor.  The gap between these two peaks provides access to upper Pole Creek and Bradley Hut from Shirley Canyon and the base of Squaw Valley Ski Area.

Lake Tahoe & Heavenly.  Climbing higher on the ridge provides nice views to the south over Lake Tahoe.  Heavenly Ski Area and Freel Peak are the mountains on the horizon.

Also, notice the sweet line running down and to the right from the small peaklet in the center of the photo.  In the right conditions (like today!) it provides a killer low angle powder run down to the Squaw Fire Station.

Granite Chief.  Looking out to Granite Chief at Squaw Valley (Shirley Canyon below).  Again, notice the sweet low angle pow run in the foreground.  At Squaw on the other side of the valley, thousands of people have tracked out the powder in an hour.  Just on the other side, this run lies untouched.

Needle Peak & Ridge.  Needle Peak, Lyon Peak and the rest of the North Fork Ridge towards Royal Gorge.  Very remote access, but that big white face on the right looks tasty...

On the Summit.  The obligatory summit shot on top of Silver Peak.

Upper Pole Creek.  A good view down into the head of Pole Creek.  The pointy peak at center is Tinker Knob.  In the distance at right is Castle Peak, just above I-80 at Donner Summit.
