Backcountry ski and snowboard gear, camping

This website is mostly a collection of great memories from trips to the Lake Tahoe and High Sierra wilderness.  It provides me with a much needed outlet from the dueling demands of family and the evil corporate world.

I grew up in Colorado where I was first introduced to the mountains.  Living in a craphole known as Pagosa Springs, I learned to ski at Wolf Creek, home of the country's deepest snowpack.  I later attended high school in Vail, and -- after an ill-advised detour to snowless San Diego for college -- returned there to ski bum for a year since I lacked anything better to do with my life.  During that year, working as a professional in the "outdoor retail industry", I began ski touring and snowshoeing, and made several (in retrospect, rather ill-advised) winter ascents of Colorado's 14,000 peaks.  When a friend from Crested Butte introduced me to the then-moribund hippy sport of telemark skiing, it was a match made in heaven.  Flimsy, expensive gear and you get to eat shit a lot -- what's not to like?

I moved back to California to attend law school in San Francisco, where I spent my free weekends discovering the intense beauty of Yosemite, Tahoe and the incomparable Sierra Nevada.  Northern California is the spot.  Everything is right here within an easy drive (beach, mountains, cycling, rivers, kayaking) and it all centers around the greatest city on earth.  I now live north of San Francisco in the hills of Marin county, but I spend every possible moment making trips up to the Sierra high country -- rock climbing, backpacking and, of course, skiing.

Photographs, Images and Video:

Unless otherwise noted, all photographs and images on this site were taken or created by me.  I'm very much an amateur photographer -- I use a Canon 20D when I feel like schlepping the big dog.  Otherwise, I use a Canon Sureshot S40 digital camera with no frills attached.  Feel free to use (non-commercially) photos you poach from the site, but please let folks know where you got them.  Send me an email and ask if you want to make commercial use of the photos and I'll almost certainly be fine with it.

Videos were shot with a Sony DCP-101 MiniDV camera, and edited with crappy video editing software.

A Note on our Sponsors:

The advertising links on this site will take you to good merchants who will pay me a referral fee if you buy something from them.  That said, this site is not designed to make a single penny, nor do I think it ever will.  If I receive any funds from these purchases, it will solely be to cover my costs of keeping the site hosted and available.  If I collect anything above that small amount, it will be donated to a worthy charitable organization.

Thanks, and enjoy.
