Backcountry ski and snowboard gear, camping

February 2004

The next morning we woke and meet the other hut mates and splitters, OFD20 who we quickly dubbed Firefighter Dan (because he is one) and BCD (backcountry Dan). We asked about forum member simo and the other guys hadn’t seen him. This worried me as he was the even organizer and since he had planned to start early on Monday…he should be here. We had no choice but to shrug it off. It would turn out later that his group got sidetracked on the way in and also had an injury which would send them back to the car and ultimately miss the split fest.

We were all stoked to be there and we quickly hit the trail. It hadn’t snowed in 4days but the weekenders left plenty of fresh tracks to be had. The moderate temps combined with the east winds kept the radiation effect down and dry snow intact.

Note:  clicking on any photograph will present a full screen version.

Deep Creek.  I wanted to check out the east side of Tinkers Knob and pitched the sell to the group…they were in. On the ridge the winds were strong and we were glad to get off it.  We dropped off the north side of the ridge behind the hut towards Deep Creek and found some good snow.   Once down in the valley, we skinned beneath the peaks at the head of Deep Creek towards Tinker Knob.

Below Tinker Knob.  Once at the base of Tinker we took the lookers right ridge to the main ridge. We found some cool features in the terrain and good snow.  BCD carves a triple over-head set wave and looks down the barrel.

Carving.  Firefighter Dan enjoys the windpack (left), while I ride the spine (below left) and backside slash my set wave (below).

Mmcpheet.  Our trusty photographer also gets his turns on (photo: C. Gallardo).

Textured Snow.  One of the things that draws me to the backcountry is the natural aspects of the winter environment. Here is a taste of the beauty the mountains offer in the winter that you just don’t see in summer thanks to Matt’s eye.

Liftoff.  On our way back down the valley towards our uptrack, BCD found this little jump for some splitboard testing.  Cool colors on the rocks.

My Turn.  I follow right behind Dan.

Skin Time.  I was on an '04 Burton Split, BCD was on a home split Burton board with Voile hardware, and Firefighter Dan was on a Voile Board.  (photo: C.Gallardo)

No Name.  Back on top, we traversed over to the impressive ridge of serrated no-name peaks that connects Tinker Knob to Silver Peak where mmcpheet captured this shot.

Hut Loungin'.  We made it back to the hut to find two new hut mates, a couple from Tahoe City (AT skiers).  We enjoyed some Guinness and talked about the day over grub.  Here are the two splitter Dans.  (photo C. Gallardo).

Sleep came easy that night in the hut as it always does after a good day of skinning and riding.
