Autumn in Tuolumne.  I spent the night at Tioga Pass and drove over to Tuolumne Meadows at sunrise.  I would love to say that I did it so I could see the first rays of light dancing off the yellow mosses and illuminating the peaks.  Well, I did see that too, but actually (being the cheap bastard that I am) I got up early to enter the park before the entrance booth opened and I would have to pay the $20 entrance fee.

Monarch of the Meadows.  It was a chilly morning, but I wandered out into the meadows at sunrise to get a look above the trees at the day's objective.

Fairview Dome.  A great view of this classic dome at the west end of Tuolumne.

Unicorn Peak.  Well named, this striking spire guards the entrance to the Budd Creek drainage.

Up Towards Cathedral.  After a few miles of hiking along the John Muir Trail, we branched left and headed cross country up the west slopes of Cathedral Peak, aiming for Eichorn Pinnacle.

From the West Slope.  Once we left the wooded valley and ascended the west slope of the peak, the views opened up dramatically.  This shot looks due north over Fairview Dome to the Sawtooth Ridge area.  The highpoint in the center is Matterhorn Peak.  The dark-looking peak to its right is Twin Peaks, with Horse Creek Pass in between.

Mount Conness.  From the same spot, but looking a little bit to the east, one can see Ragged Peak and the spectacular west face of Mount Conness (the huge sunlit granite face at far right).  The pretty line that drops down to the meadows is the west ridge, a classic Sierra route.
