Backcountry ski and snowboard gear, camping

June 2001

Trek Day 6 (continued) -- Above Carhuacocha:   At the end of our hike up to the lake, we watched our trek crew do some trout fishing "peruvian style" in the creek.  Basically, you climb into the freezing glacial runoff with your bare feet; then you try to dam up one small tributary of the creek with a nylon tarp and some rocks; then you go down the dammed up tributary poking under rocks trying to find the fish; then you throw the fish up onto the riverbank with your hands.  Sounds complicated?  It is.

Trout fishing Peruvian style (how many guys does it take to catch one fish?)

Having successfully limited the flow of the water down this fork of the creek, Salcedo, Antonio and Binder try to find those elusive brook trout by poking under rocks with tree branches.

Looking down valley to Carhuacocha.  Our camp sat high up on top of the hillside at the left side of the lake.  On our walk back to camp, we saw a ton of Andean geese and other incredible birds in the marsh above the lake.

The clouds lift briefly to reveal the incredible east face of Jirishanca

The lofty summit of Yerupaja as seen from camp.

Two young visitors call on our camp later that evening.
