Backcountry ski and snowboard gear, camping

May 2002

Fred Rips the Bowl.  As with most of the skiing on this trip, we found heavier, chunky snow at the top of the runs (seen here), giving way to perfect corn after a few turns.  The heavier snow was leftover from the storm of the previous weekend, which dropped more than a foot of snow in this area.

Climbing Again.  After skiing the bowl down to Helen Lake, we skinned back up for the climb up to the jagged ridgeline leading northwest from Kuna Peak.

Approaching the Helen Lake Chute.  From the plateau, Sam puts the skis on his pack and starts a long bootpack up the Helen Lake Chute.

Sam Breaks Trail.  Thanks again to Sam for packing a nice trail all the way up this steep chute.

Rich Tops Out.  Here's me topping out on the ridge.  The northern half of the Kuna Crest stretches out behind me.

Koip/Kuna Bowl.  Fred rests on the ridge, with a view across to Koip and Kuna Peaks.
