Lovers Leap. From the bottom of
Lover Leap, we cut down across the old Pony Express route
and then skinned up for the short hike up the Hogsback.
On the way up, we were treated this fine view back to
where we just skied.

Spoon Tracks. Looking back at our tracks
down the east shoulder. Someone had beaten us to the
goods on this face, but we had nice fresh tracks
nonetheless. Our tracks are at far right,
hugging the cliff wall. |

Chris drops in on the Hogsback. The
pyramid shaped Hogsback holds a short but fairly
consistent 40-45 degree angle down the face.
Chris allowed me first tracks. From halfway
down, I got these shots of Chris ripping it up.
Check out the huge rooster tail in the shot below. |

Epic river crossing.
We skied a bit low after descending the Hogsback, and
dropped all the way down to the South Fork of the
American. Chris (in snowboard boots) and Sierra
(with four burly paws) easily crossed this narrow log.
I popped my skis on my pack and crawled across,
straddling the log and hanging on for my life. |

Back in the Bay Area.
Chris and I said our goodbyes back at Camp Sacramento,
and I headed home to SF. It snowed hard all the
way down to about the 2,000' level, signifying an
unusually cold storm. Further evidence of the
cold temperatures was seen on my commute to work on
Monday morning -- this view is from Highway 101 south
in Redwood City, looking down towards Mount Hamilton,
draped in powder. |
