Backcountry ski and snowboard gear, camping

October 2001

On the summit.  That's me on top of Matterhorn Peak.  The slightly lower summit of Whorl Mountain mocks me in the background.  Matterhorn has terrific views out over the entire expanse of Yosemite National Park.  The next page has some cool summit panorama shots.

Sawtooth Ridge.  Looking NW from the summit over the jagged spires of the Sawtooth Ridge, including the aptly named Dragtooth, "The Three Teeth" and the Sawblade.

Twin Peaks.  Looking SE over the jagged mess that is called Twin Peaks.  The red rounded summit of Dunderberg Peak (12,374') rises in the background.

Down the east couloir.  From the summit, the view down into the east couloir is rather amazing.

Hiking out.  I got back down to camp at around 2:30.  I ate some lunch, packed up my gear and rehydrated.  I hit the trail at around 3:30, hoping to be back down to the car before dark.  On the way down, I got one last look back up to Matterhorn.  Note that the couloir known as "ski dreams" on the left is still full of snow.

Robinson Peak.  As I reached the meadow on Horse Creek, the late afternoon sun was painting colors on the face of Robinson Peak.  I made it down to the car by 6:15 and promptly drove into Bridgeport for some pizza at Rhino's.  I was back home in SF by midnight.

The next page has some cool photo panoramas from Whorl and Matterhorn.
