Beautiful clear
skies and great ski conditions were on tap for our
trip to the Pear Lake Hut. After some
interesting adventures getting in to the hut, we
spent a couple of days exploring this magnificent
area.

Pear
Lake is located on the western edge of the High Sierra in
Sequoia National Park. The surrounding area is a
backcountry skier's promised land, offering endless
opportunities for day tours and ski descents. As if
this weren't good enough, the Sequoia Natural History
Association maintains a hut just below Pear Lake that
shelters up to ten lucky souls. The hut is a perfect
base from which to explore the surrounding backcountry.
Reservations are required for the hut. Most weekends
book up at the beginning of the winter season, so act early
if you want to take advantage of the relative luxuries of
the hut. Camping near the hut or up at Pear Lake is a
bit colder, but still well worth it if you can't get into
the hut.
