Rest Stop. After
dropping down from North Peak, I traversed over
towards Mount Conness. Skinning up to the toe of
the glacier, I peeled skins and skied down the nice
bowl to my "camp". I took a short rest and
melted some drinking water, and then I packed up and
headed out. |
|
 |
North Peak. Looking
back at North Peak, you can just see my tracks down
the south slopes, and the small avalanche coming off
the rocks to the right of the tracks. |
|
 |
Excelsior. Another
cool shot of Excelsior Mountain. In the summer,
this peak is an uninteresting pile of rubble. In
winter, however, the snow gives it a completely
different appearance. |
|
 |
Skiing Out. Just before hitting Saddlebag
Lake on the way out, I paused for another photo. |
|
 |
Sunset on North Peak.
Looking up for the last time from near Greenstone &
Saddlebag Lakes. |
|

|
Long Traverse.
Heading back down, Saddlebag Lake was no longer frozen
solid, necessitating an annoying sidehill traverse
above the west shore. |
|

|
Ellery Bowl. I made
it back to the car in one piece. I drove down
the Tioga road to check out the large bowl above
Ellery Lake. The "chute out" couloir is the
prominent chute just right of center. |

|
Third Pillar. Driving down 120, you get
some cool views up into the peaks. Here, the
day's final rays of sunshine hit the Third Pillar of
Dana, a sharp buttress falling off the eastern edge of
the Dana Plateau. |
|
 |
Gibbs & Dana. From
the Tioga Gas Mart, you get a nice look up to the east
peaks of Gibbs and Dana. |
|
 |
Mono Lake.
Turning 180 degrees, you also get a pretty spectacular
view of Mono Lake. A nice place to fill up your
gas tank. |
