Backcountry ski and snowboard gear, camping

January 2004

Note:  clicking on any photograph will present a full screen version.

Near the Summit.  Toby skinning up the final few hundred feet to the top of Tallac.  Snow-covered Gilmore Lake lies below at right.  Beyond, Pyramid Peak crowns the Crystal Range.  Chris and I skied the north face of Pyramid last June and still found some perfect corn snow even that late in the year.

Dropping in.  A random snowboarder dropping the north bowl of Tallac.  A snowy and cold December means there's still a lot of snow at lake level, as you can see here.

The Cross.  Obligatory shot of the entrance to the cross couloir on the frontside of Tallac.  Looks pretty hairball from here.

Right Arm Entrance.  We skied the north bowl, then hung a hard right and dropped the entrance to the "right arm" of the cross.  Here, Chris negotiates the steep entrance to the chute.

Crankin' It.  Toby cranking turns through the windpack below the cross.

Crud Busting.  Snowboards have a distinct advantage in crappy conditions like we had.  Here, Chris is busting up the crud.  That rooster tail of snow is definitely NOT powder.

Fallen Leaf Lake.  Toby above Fallen Leaf Lake before traversing back towards to trailhead.

Babycham Couloir.  Looking up at this steep chute that drops off the east face from just below the summit.  Only doable in macking snow years by riders with large nads.

Testing out the Prior.  Chris having fun in the lower cross chute on the new board.

Last Turns.  Toby leads the way back to the trailhead above Fallen Leaf Lake.  Freel Peak and Jobs Sister in the background.
