Backcountry ski and snowboard gear, camping

This region encompasses the entire northwest Tahoe area.  It spans roughly from I-80 and the Donner Pass area, southeast towards Lake Tahoe and its west shore.  It includes the Granite Chief Wilderness, and the backcountry around the Squaw Valley and Alpine Meadows ski areas.


Day Hikes

  • PCT south from Donner Pass

  • Squaw Valley/Shirley Canyon

  • Little Needle Lake from Alpine or Squaw

  • Alpine Meadows/Five Lakes Trail

Peak Bagging

  • Anderson Peak from Donner Pass

  • Tinker Knob from Squaw Valley

  • Twin Peaks from Ward Creek or Barker Pass

Wilderness Permits

Permits are not presently required for the Granite Chief Wilderness.  However, please observe wilderness regulations (e.g., no campfires) and backcountry ethics.
