Many of the activities covered on TahoeBackcountry.net take place in federally-designated wilderness areas or national parks.  Use of these areas (both day use and overnight use) is subject to varying degrees of regulation that can change frequently.   Below is a set of links to the relevant red tape in the USFS-managed wilderness areas and NPS-managed parks.  The list runs roughly north to south along the Sierra crest.

• Granite Chief Wilderness -- Small and little used wilderness area NW of Lake Tahoe

• Desolation Wilderness -- A beautiful but heavily used area SW of Lake Tahoe

• Mokelumne Wilderness -- Located between Carson and Ebbets Passes

• Carson-Iceberg Wilderness -- Located between Ebbets and Sonora passes

• Emigrant Wilderness -- Located south of Sonora Pass, provides a buffer on the northern border of Yosemite

• Hoover Wilderness -- Located NE of Yosemite NP, near Bridgeport, CA

• Yosemite National Park

• Ansel Adams/John Muir Wilderness -- A long chain of wilderness areas mostly east of the Sierra crest.  These are where the big peaks are located.

• Sequoia/Kings Canyon National Parks (SeKi)
